Background

Bitcoin extended its losses on Tuesday, falling as risk-off sentiment gripped global markets. The downturn was fueled by escalating geopolitical tensions following U.S. military strikes against Iran and a concurrent sell-off in technology stocks, pushing the leading cryptocurrency down 1.4% to $63,305.0 by late afternoon trading.

Geopolitical Tensions Spark Market Jitters

The primary catalyst for the negative sentiment was the U.S. military's retaliatory action in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it launched strikes in response to attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had earlier reported the vessel attacks.

Such escalations heighten investor uncertainty, typically leading to a flight from risk-sensitive assets like cryptocurrencies. The market reaction was also evident in energy markets, where oil prices jumped more than 5% following the news.

Market Headwinds and ETF Flows

Adding to the pressure, a slide in technology stocks weighed on assets with high-growth correlations. The sell-off was partly triggered by investor concerns that the artificial intelligence rally may be overextended, despite a strong profit forecast from Samsung Electronics.

However, institutional demand for Bitcoin showed some underlying resilience. According to data compiled by SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs registered notable net inflows for a second consecutive session:

  • $265.7 million in net inflows on Monday.
  • This followed $221.7 million in inflows on July 2.

These figures mark a notable reversal from late June, when the funds saw nearly $2.4 billion in outflows amid macroeconomic uncertainty. Investors are now looking ahead to the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday for further clues on the U.S. interest-rate outlook.

Broader Crypto Market Declines

The negative sentiment was felt across the digital asset space, with most major alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, tracking Bitcoin's decline. Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 1.8% to trade at $1,773.32.

Other major tokens including XRP, Solana (SOL), and Cardano (ADA) also posted significant losses, falling 3.1%, 2%, and 5.5% respectively, according to market data.
