Bitcoin Climbs Toward $79,000 as U.S. Regulatory Developments Take Center Stage

Bitcoin edged higher on Thursday, though it remained below recent peaks as market participants closely watched for potential progress on a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
As of 9:36 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading up 1.8% at $78,643.4, according to Investing.com data. The cryptocurrency has pulled back since briefly touching a high of $82,000 in late August but has maintained most of its recent gains, supported by continued purchases from corporate holder MicroStrategy Inc. and anticipation of clearer U.S. regulations.
Regulatory Clarity in Focus
Market attention is fixed on the "Clarity Act," a proposed bill aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for the U.S. crypto industry. Former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins stated earlier this week that he expects the Senate to hold a key procedural vote on the bill by September 15, according to a report from Investing.com.
Atkins, speaking on Fox Business, noted that the SEC is concurrently developing its own "Crypto Asset Regulatory Proposal." He emphasized that the agency would move forward with its own framework even if the Clarity Act does not pass Congress. "The Crypto Asset Regulatory Proposal is the most historic step we have taken to date to solidify America’s status as the global capital for cryptocurrency," Atkins said, a position he stated was consistent with the hope that Congress would pass the Clarity Act.
Market Context and Macro Headwinds
AdDespite the optimism around regulation, broader market sentiment for speculative assets remains cautious due to macroeconomic pressures. These include ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran and rising expectations for interest rate hikes from both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan.
Andrew Forson, President of DeFi Technologies, argued that Bitcoin's recent price strength is more than a simple technical rebound driven by liquidity shifts from the U.S. Treasury market. In an interview with Investing.com, Forson noted the unusual trend of Bitcoin rallying while the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose nearly 10 basis points in recent weeks. Typically, rising yields put downward pressure on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and gold.
Altcoin Market Performance
Other major cryptocurrencies also saw modest gains on Thursday, though they traded within a relatively narrow range. Key movements included:
- Ethereum (ETH): Up approximately 1% to $2,424.84
- XRP: Gained 3.9%
- Cardano (ADA): Rose 6.5%
- Solana (SOL): Increased by 2.1%
- BNB: Climbed 3.4%
