Background

Bitcoin's price rose nearly 2% on Thursday to trade above $63,000, as an apparent easing of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran improved broad market risk sentiment and prompted a decline in oil prices.

By late afternoon, Bitcoin was trading at $63,352.8, a 1.9% increase, according to Investing.com data. The move reverses losses from the previous session when escalating conflict had pushed investors toward safer assets.

Geopolitical Tensions Ease

The rally in risk assets, including cryptocurrencies, followed comments from President Donald Trump suggesting a potential de-escalation with Iran. According to reports, Trump said Iran had contacted Washington and wants to "make a deal so badly," which helped reverse a recent spike in oil prices.

This development came after a period of heightened conflict, including U.S. military strikes on approximately 170 targets in Iran and retaliatory strikes from Iranian forces on U.S. bases in the region. The de-escalation in rhetoric provided relief to markets that had been pricing in a wider conflict.

Market Dynamics and On-Chain Data

Analysts noted that the price recovery is showing signs of fundamental strength, driven more by direct purchases than by leveraged speculation. "The move higher is being driven by spot demand rather than leverage," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, in a note. He added that crypto's resilience marks a "behavioral shift from the pattern that defined much of Q2."

Several on-chain metrics support a constructive, if cautious, outlook:

  • Futures Open Interest: Has declined to around $30 billion, according to Glassnode, suggesting traders are reducing leveraged exposure amid macro volatility.
  • Exchange Supply: The amount of Bitcoin held on centralized exchanges has fallen to 6.6% of the circulating supply, its lowest level since 2017. Historically, lower exchange balances can indicate reduced selling pressure.
  • Implied Volatility: The 30-day implied volatility index has decreased, pointing to market expectations for calmer trading conditions ahead.

Broader Market Context

The positive sentiment was also supported by minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting, which Kalchev described as striking a "more divided and less hawkish tone than markets feared." While the FOMC's policy outlook remains a key factor, the immediate focus has shifted back to macroeconomic and geopolitical drivers.

Most other major cryptocurrencies followed Bitcoin's move higher. As of late Thursday, Ethereum was up 0.6%, while XRP and Solana also posted modest gains.
