Bitcoin Climbs Above $63,000 as Easing U.S.-Iran Tensions Boost Risk Appetite

Summary

The price of Bitcoin gained nearly 2% to top $63,000 on Thursday as investor risk sentiment improved following comments from President Trump suggesting a potential de-escalation of conflict with Iran, which also sent oil prices lower.

Background

Bitcoin's price rose on Thursday, recovering from the previous session's losses as a perceived easing of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran improved broader market risk sentiment. The world's largest cryptocurrency was up 1.9% to trade at $63,352.8 by 17:09 ET (21:09 GMT), according to Investing.com data.

Geopolitical Tensions and Market Impact

The move higher followed comments from President Donald Trump, who told reporters that Iran had contacted Washington and wanted to "make a deal so badly." This came after the U.S. launched strikes against approximately 170 targets in Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers. The apparent de-escalation caused oil prices, which had hit three-week highs, to decline as traders priced in a lower risk of a full-scale military conflict.

Bitcoin's price action showed notable resilience, according to one analyst. "Crypto sold off on the initial escalation headlines but rallied from oversold territory rather than extending losses -- a behavioral shift from the pattern that defined much of Q2, when every macro shock drove capital out of the sector," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch.

Spot Demand and On-Chain Signals

Market data suggests the current rally is being driven by spot buying rather than speculative leverage. "Bitcoin futures open interest has declined to around $30 billion, according to Glassnode, as the price recovered -- traders are reluctant to add leveraged exposure in a volatile macro environment," Kalchev noted. He added that a decline in the 30-day implied volatility index points to expectations of calmer conditions ahead.

A key on-chain metric is also signaling a potentially constructive outlook for the asset. "The supply of Bitcoin held on centralized exchanges has fallen to its lowest since 2017, at roughly 6.6% of circulating supply," Kalchev explained. Historically, a sustained decrease in exchange balances has preceded longer-term bull markets, as it reduces the readily available supply for selling.

Broader Market Moves

Investor sentiment was also buoyed by minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting, which Kalchev described as striking a "more divided and less hawkish tone than markets feared." While some FOMC participants argued for an immediate rate hike, the broader committee appeared split on the future path of inflation.

Other major cryptocurrencies also posted gains, tracking Bitcoin's upward move.

  • Ethereum (ETH) added 0.6% to trade at $1,749.50.
  • XRP climbed 0.6% to $1.0975.
  • Solana (SOL) rose 1.2%, while Dogecoin (DOGE) increased by 1.4%.
