Background

Bitcoin's price rose nearly 2% to top $63,000 on Thursday, as an apparent de-escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions improved broader market risk sentiment and prompted a pullback in oil prices.

The world's largest cryptocurrency was last trading at $63,352.8, a notable recovery from the previous session's losses which were driven by heightened geopolitical concerns.

Geopolitics and Oil Drive Sentiment

The market's shift toward risk-on assets followed comments from President Donald Trump, who said Iran had contacted Washington and wanted to "make a deal so badly," according to an Investing.com report. This helped ease fears of a wider conflict after the U.S. conducted strikes against approximately 170 targets in Iran earlier in the week.

The change in rhetoric caused oil prices, which had reached three-week highs, to decline. Bitcoin's rally from oversold levels, rather than extending losses on the initial escalation, marks a "behavioral shift from the pattern that defined much of Q2," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch.

Spot Demand Supports Rally

Market data suggests the recent price strength is being driven by fundamental buying rather than speculative leverage. Kalchev noted that the move higher is occurring alongside a decline in derivatives exposure.

Key indicators include:

  • Bitcoin futures open interest has declined to around $30 billion, according to data from Glassnode, as the price recovered.
  • The 30-day implied volatility index has fallen, pointing to market expectations of calmer conditions ahead.

Kalchev also highlighted a structural signal, noting that the supply of Bitcoin on centralized exchanges has fallen to its lowest point since 2017, at roughly 6.6% of circulating supply. "Historically, sustained drawdowns in exchange balances have preceded multi-quarter bull phases," he added.

Broader Market Picture

Investors were also digesting the minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting, which Kalchev described as striking a "more divided and less hawkish tone than markets feared."

The positive sentiment was reflected across the digital asset space. Other major cryptocurrencies also advanced, with Ethereum adding 0.6% and Solana rising 1.2% during the session.
