BioNTech Stock Falls on BMO Downgrade Amid Weakening Vaccine Demand

BioNTech SE (BNTX) shares slipped 1.2% in pre-open trading to $102.55 after analysts at BMO Capital downgraded the stock, highlighting persistent concerns over the company's revenue outlook following the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Analyst Downgrade Details
BMO Capital lowered its rating on BioNTech to Market Perform from a previous Outperform rating. The firm also significantly cut its price target on the stock to $105 from $128.
In its note, BMO cited several key factors for the more cautious stance:
- Softer global demand for COVID-19 vaccines.
- An ongoing inventory drawdown in Germany.
- A long-term revenue model for the Comirnaty vaccine that is materially below the broader analyst consensus.
Compounding Headwinds
AdThe downgrade adds to recent pressure on the stock. In late August, BioNTech and its partner Genentech, a unit of Roche, announced the termination of a Phase 2 trial for their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, autogene cevumeran, after it failed to meet a futility threshold. The decision removed a key potential catalyst and raised questions about the company's oncology pipeline strategy.
This follows a downward revision of BioNTech's full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of €1.6 billion to €1.9 billion, down from a prior forecast of €2.0 billion to €2.3 billion. The weaker outlook has prompted other analysts to trim their revenue and earnings forecasts in recent weeks.
Market Context and Outlook
The BMO downgrade crystallizes a growing market narrative: the decline in BioNTech's post-pandemic revenue is proving steeper than many investors had anticipated. While the company is advancing a broad oncology pipeline with numerous trials underway, it has yet to deliver the commercial results needed to offset the sharp drop in vaccine sales.
With the new price target from a previously bullish firm suggesting limited near-term upside, investors are recalibrating expectations as the company navigates its transition away from its COVID-19 vaccine windfall.
