Billions in Currency Options to Expire Wednesday, Targeting Key Levels in Major Pairs

Billions of dollars in currency option contracts are scheduled to expire this Wednesday, a development that could influence price action across several major foreign exchange pairs. The expiries, concentrated in EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and GBP/USD, may lead to increased activity around specific price levels as traders manage their positions.
Key Expiries by Currency Pair
Data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) highlights several contracts with substantial notional values set to expire. The most significant are concentrated in the following pairs:
- EUR/USD: Contracts include €1.88 billion at the 1.1400 strike price, €1.33 billion at 1.1500, and €960 million at 1.1750.
- USD/JPY: Expiries are set for $1.12 billion at 164.50, $1.05 billion at 160.00, and $949.6 million at 163.50.
- GBP/USD: A single large contract worth £1.37 billion is set to expire at the 1.3350 strike.
- USD/CAD: Notable expiries include $731.4 million at 1.4250 and $594.3 million at 1.4100.
Other pairs with scheduled Wednesday expiries include AUD/USD, USD/CNY, and USD/MXN, according to the DTCC data.
Potential Market Impact
AdLarge option expiries can exert a "pinning" effect on the spot market. As the expiration time approaches, an underlying currency pair's price may be drawn toward strike prices with high notional values, potentially dampening volatility in the short term.
This phenomenon occurs as options traders hedge their positions to manage risk, which can create buying or selling pressure that anchors the spot price near the strike. Once the options expire, this gravitational pull is removed, which can sometimes release pent-up price momentum and lead to a subsequent increase in volatility.
Looking Ahead
Traders will also be watching for significant expiries later in the week and into the next. The DTCC data shows additional large contracts scheduled for July 10 in EUR/USD (€1.63 billion at 1.1300) and GBP/USD (£606 million at 1.3400).
A particularly large USD/JPY expiry of $3.42 billion is slated for July 13 at the 160.50 strike, suggesting that positioning around this level will remain a focus for the market into next week.
