Bilfinger Stock Plummets Over 22% After Slashing Profit Outlook

Summary
The German industrial services firm drastically cut its full-year EBITA margin forecast and announced a major restructuring program, citing a sudden drop in customer demand.
Shares of Bilfinger SE plunged more than 22% in Thursday trading after the industrial services provider issued a severe profit warning, dramatically cutting its financial targets for 2026 and announcing a significant cost-reduction plan.
Drastic Guidance Cut
In an announcement late Wednesday, the Mannheim-based company detailed a sharp downward revision to its full-year forecast, citing a sudden deterioration in customer demand during the third quarter. The updated guidance includes:
- EBITA Margin: Now expected to be between 3.2% and 3.6%, a steep reduction from the prior range of 5.8% to 6.2%.
- Revenue: Trimmed to a range of €5.3–5.7 billion, down from €5.4–5.9 billion.
- Free Cash Flow: Forecast cut to €180–220 million from a previous estimate of €250–300 million.
Weakening Demand and Restructuring
Bilfinger attributed the guidance collapse to a "marked and sudden increase in customer caution," which has slowed both the awarding of new contracts and the utilization of services under existing agreements. The company noted that ongoing conflict in the Middle East has weighed on project activity in its key energy, chemical, and oil and gas markets.
AdIn response, Bilfinger's board approved a restructuring initiative named "program Agile." The plan, which could affect up to 1,500 positions globally, will require a one-time provision of approximately €75 million in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company expects the program to generate annual savings of around €75 million starting in 2028.
Market Reaction
The stock's collapse was starkly at odds with the broader market, as Germany's DAX index posted modest gains. Bilfinger shares (GBFG) fell to a new 52-week low of €56.275, their lowest point in approximately 18 months.
The severity of the market's reaction reflects the near-halving of the company's profitability outlook and the significant new restructuring charge. This forces investors to reassess the credibility and timeline of Bilfinger's medium-term recovery targets.
