Auto Parts Retailers Rally After Genuine Parts Denies Sale Talks

Shares of major auto parts retailers advanced in premarket trading on Tuesday after Genuine Parts (NYSE:GPC) formally denied market speculation that it was in discussions to sell its automotive business to a competitor.
Official Denial
During its earnings call on Tuesday, Genuine Parts management directly addressed the rumors. The company's statement sought to end uncertainty that had been circulating in the market.
"We are aware of recent market speculation about a potential transaction between the global automotive business and a competitor. I want to take this opportunity to officially confirm that we are not currently in discussions with any competitor," the company said, according to a Bloomberg News report of the call.
Market Impact
The denial removed the prospect of a major industry consolidation, which investors viewed as a positive for competitors. The news prompted a relief rally across the sector:
Ad- O’Reilly Automotive (NASDAQ:ORLY) shares rose 7.2%.
- Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) shares increased 6.3%.
- AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) shares climbed 4.4%.
For investors, the end of M&A speculation suggests the current competitive landscape will remain stable, preventing a rival from gaining significant market share through a large-scale acquisition.
Background
The statement from Genuine Parts follows reports from July 3 that indicated O’Reilly Automotive had expressed interest in acquiring GPC's automotive unit. Tuesday's explicit denial has put that speculation to rest for the time being.
