Background

Australian shares finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index falling 1.03% to close at a new one-month low. The decline was driven by widespread losses across key sectors, reflecting growing investor caution.

Sector Weakness Drives Market Lower

The session's downturn was led by significant weakness in the Information Technology, Materials, and Metals & Mining sectors. This broad-based pressure points to a risk-off sentiment among market participants.

Market breadth was decidedly negative on the Sydney Stock Exchange. According to closing data, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a wide margin, with 761 issues declining compared to 333 that gained. Another 356 stocks ended the session unchanged.

Volatility Spikes to 3-Month High

A key indicator of market anxiety, the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, surged 11.84% to 13.14. This marks a new three-month high for the volatility index, which measures the market's expectation of 30-day volatility.

The sharp rise in the VIX suggests that investors are bracing for increased market turbulence in the near term.
