Background

ASX Ltd, the operator of the Australian Securities Exchange, announced on Friday that Chief Financial Officer Andrew Tobin intends to retire, signaling another key change in its executive ranks. The departure comes just two months after the company named a new chief executive and as it continues to navigate significant operational and regulatory challenges.

A Period of Transition

According to the bourse operator, Tobin has agreed to remain in his role while the company conducts a search for his successor to ensure a smooth transition. Tobin joined ASX in 2022 and has overseen the finance, treasury, strategy, and corporate affairs teams for the past four years.

In a statement, Interim CEO Darren Yip acknowledged Tobin's service. "Andrew has made a significant contribution over the past four years as ASX navigated a demanding operating environment," Yip said.

Tobin's retirement follows a series of leadership changes and operational setbacks for the exchange. The announcement comes ahead of the official start date for incoming CEO Anthony Attia, a former Euronext executive, who is set to assume the role on September 1. Attia's appointment followed the abrupt resignation of former CEO Helen Lofthouse earlier this year.

The exchange has been under heightened regulatory scrutiny following several high-profile incidents, including:

  • A company-name mix-up in August 2025
  • An outage of its market announcements platform in December 2025

These events underscore the "demanding operating environment" mentioned by the interim CEO. The combined departure of a long-time CEO and a four-year CFO points to a significant leadership reset aimed at addressing these persistent issues and restoring confidence among market participants and regulators.
