Background

Asian stock markets showed a mixed performance in Wednesday trading, as a strong rally in semiconductor shares driven by artificial intelligence optimism was offset by mounting concerns over inflation fueled by soaring oil prices.

Chipmakers Lead Gains on AI Optimism

The technology sector, particularly semiconductor manufacturers, provided a significant bright spot in the region. The sustained investor enthusiasm for AI infrastructure helped lift key players, following a positive lead from the U.S. where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.3% on Tuesday.

South Korea’s KOSPI index was a notable outperformer, climbing 1.5%. The gains were led by major chipmakers:

  • SK Hynix rose 3.6%
  • Samsung Electronics gained 0.8%

Supporting the positive sentiment, South Korea's economy grew 0.6% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, beating forecasts on the back of strong semiconductor exports. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 also edged higher by 0.14%, with electronics firms like TDK and Kioxia seeing gains.

Rising Oil Prices Fuel Inflation and Rate Hike Fears

A significant headwind for broader market sentiment is the sharp rise in crude oil prices, which is stoking fears of persistent inflation. Brent crude futures are approaching the $100 per barrel mark, a level not seen since July, and are up more than 60% this year amid reports of intensifying geopolitical tensions.

This development comes ahead of Friday's U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, a critical data point for the Federal Reserve. According to the source material, markets are currently pricing in approximately a 60% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike at the Fed's upcoming September meeting.

A Mixed Picture Across the Region

Performance was varied across other major Asian markets. Chinese stocks saw modest gains, with the Shanghai Composite up 0.2% and the CSI 300 rising 0.1%. Data showed China’s August CPI rose 0.8% year-on-year, but a weak core CPI of just 1% pointed to continued softness in domestic demand.

Elsewhere, indices were mostly in negative territory. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.2%, weighed down by some technology shares. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.2%, while Singapore’s Straits Times Index and India’s Nifty 50 lost 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively.
