Asian Currencies Gain as Oil Price Plunge Dents Dollar Strength

Most Asian currencies advanced against a weaker U.S. dollar on Monday, as a significant retreat in oil prices eased concerns about a potential inflation shock and reduced safe-haven demand for the greenback. The move comes as investors reposition ahead of a pivotal Federal Reserve policy decision later in the week.
Oil Slump Eases Inflation Fears
A de-escalation in Middle East tensions triggered a sharp sell-off in the energy market, with Brent crude futures falling more than 5% during Asian trading. According to reports, Washington paused its two-week military campaign against Iran, while Tehran agreed to suspend retaliatory attacks, following diplomatic efforts to revive talks.
The decline in oil prices has alleviated investor fears of prolonged supply disruptions and the resulting inflationary pressures. This sentiment weighed on the U.S. dollar, with the U.S. Dollar Index falling 0.3% as risk appetite improved across markets.
Regional Currencies Advance, Rupiah Bucks Trend
The softer dollar provided a lift to most regional currencies. Commodity-linked currencies performed well, with the Australian and New Zealand dollars each rising by about 0.2%. The Japanese yen also firmed, with the USD/JPY pair falling 0.2% to around 163.6.
Other currencies making gains included:
Ad- The onshore and offshore Chinese yuan, which both strengthened by approximately 0.2%.
- The Indian rupee and the Taiwan dollar, which also firmed against the U.S. currency.
Indonesia's rupiah was a notable exception, weakening by around 0.5%. The currency came under pressure following the unexpected resignation of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, which has raised investor concerns about the central bank's independence and future policy direction. Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti has been appointed as interim governor.
Focus Shifts to Central Bank Decisions
Market attention is now squarely on this week's central bank meetings, headlined by the Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday. While the Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates steady, its commentary on inflation will be closely scrutinized.
Easing energy prices have shifted rate expectations. The probability of a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike this week has fallen to 33.7%, down from 37.4% on Friday, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. The Bank of England and the Bank of Japan are also scheduled to meet, with investors watching the BoJ for any signals of further policy normalization.
