Asian Chip Stocks Rally as U.S. Treasury Yields Retreat

Asian technology and semiconductor stocks rallied on Friday, taking cues from a strong performance by U.S. peers as a retreat in Treasury yields improved investor sentiment toward growth-sensitive assets. The gains were widespread across major regional markets, from Seoul to Hong Kong.
Broad Gains Across Tech Hubs
The rally lifted key players throughout the region's technology supply chain. Hong Kong's Hang Seng TECH index rose 1.5%, while major individual stocks posted significant advances.
- In South Korea, Samsung Electronics (KS:005930) gained 2.8% and memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc (KS:000660) jumped 4.5%.
- Japanese chip-related firms saw strong buying, with Advantest Corp (TYO:6857) climbing 7.3% and Tokyo Electron (TYO:8035) up 4.6%.
- In Taiwan, leading contract chipmaker TSMC (TW:2330) rose 0.6%, while MediaTek Inc (TW:2454) added 3.5%.
- Chinese chipmakers also surged, with SMIC (HK:0981) up 4.3% and Hua Hong Semiconductor (HK:1347) jumping 5.9%.
Easing Yields Boost Valuations
AdThe primary catalyst for the rally was a pullback in U.S. government bond yields. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield eased to approximately 4.94% after briefly crossing the psychologically significant 5% level earlier in the week, according to market data.
Lower bond yields are typically beneficial for technology and other growth stocks. They reduce the discount rate used to value future earnings, which can make these companies' projected profits appear more attractive to investors. A concurrent dip in oil prices also supported market sentiment, with Brent crude futures falling about 1%.
Following Wall Street's Lead
Friday's positive session in Asia directly mirrored a rebound on Wall Street. U.S. markets had closed sharply higher overnight, with both the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite posting strong gains. This synchronized move highlights the strong correlation between global technology sectors and their sensitivity to U.S. monetary policy expectations, which heavily influence Treasury yields.
