Array Technologies Stock Hits 52-Week Low After UBS Downgrade

Summary
Shares of the solar tracking company slid after UBS cut its rating to Neutral, citing concerns that a change in its preferred dividend structure will significantly constrain free cash flow.
Array Technologies (ARRY) shares fell to a new 52-week low in pre-market trading after UBS downgraded the solar tracking company, flagging concerns over a change to its dividend policy that is expected to weigh on the firm's cash flow.
UBS Slashes Rating Over Cash Flow Concerns
UBS analysts downgraded Array Technologies to Neutral from a previous Buy rating and cut their price target in half, from $10 to $5. The downgrade was prompted by a structural change in how the company will handle its preferred dividend obligations, according to the bank's note.
The company is transitioning from a payment-in-kind (PIK) arrangement to a cash-pay structure for its preferred dividends. UBS forecasts this will result in approximately $162 million in cumulative cash payments through 2030. The bank stated this is a significant commitment that will alter the company's free cash flow trajectory, limiting funds available for reinvestment or debt reduction.
Stock Tumbles as Analyst Caution Mounts
The market reacted swiftly to the downgrade, with Array's stock sliding 3.1% in pre-open trading to $4.11, a price that matched its 52-week low. The move extends a significant year-to-date decline for the shares.
AdThe cautious tone from UBS follows a similar assessment from Piper Sandler, which initiated coverage on the stock with a Neutral rating on September 8. The back-to-back neutral ratings from two separate firms suggest growing analyst skepticism about the stock's near-term upside potential.
A Company-Specific Sell-Off
The pressure on Array Technologies appeared to be company-specific rather than a reflection of broader market or sector weakness. In pre-market trading, major indices were positive, with the S&P 500 up 0.2% and the Nasdaq gaining 0.5%.
While other solar companies have faced headwinds from regulatory uncertainty and margin compression, the UBS note on Array's dividend-related cash flow constraints was the clear catalyst for Tuesday's sell-off.
