Apple Reportedly Exploring AI Chip Acquisitions to Bolster Server Efforts

Summary
Apple is considering buying AI chip startups to address performance challenges with its in-house server processors, according to a report from The Information. The move comes as the company seeks to enhance its capabilities for running large AI models.
Apple Inc. is reportedly exploring acquisitions of chip companies to strengthen its server processor development for artificial intelligence, a move that would address performance issues with its current in-house designs. The technology giant has approached chip startups and consulted with bankers about potential deals, according to a report from The Information on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the report could not be independently verified.
In-House Chip Challenges
The potential shift in strategy comes as Apple faces difficulties with its own AI server hardware. The company's current servers, which run on its internally designed M2 Ultra chips, have reportedly struggled with the demands of large AI models, according to The Information.
An internal project to develop a more advanced AI server chip, known as "Baltra," was originally slated for this year but has been delayed. The report also noted that when Apple tested Google's Gemini models for a major Siri overhaul, its Mac-based chips could not handle the workload, forcing it to use Nvidia chips within Google's cloud infrastructure.
AdStrategic and Financial Implications
A move to acquire a chip company would be a notable departure for Apple, which has historically favored smaller acquisitions and organic growth over large-scale M&A. This signals the strategic urgency of competing in the server-side AI race against rivals who rely heavily on specialized hardware from companies like Nvidia.
Apple has significant financial resources to pursue such a deal. As of March 28, the end of its second fiscal quarter, the company held $45.57 billion in cash and cash equivalents. The exploration of M&A complements Apple's other massive investments in its supply chain, including a multi-year deal with Broadcom valued at over $30 billion.
