Anthropic IPO Prospectus Targets Over $2 Trillion Valuation, $518 Billion in Spending

Summary
Details from Anthropic's IPO prospectus, seen by Reuters, reveal a potential valuation exceeding $2 trillion and planned infrastructure spending of $518 billion, fueling a rally in AI-related stocks.
AI developer Anthropic is targeting a valuation of more than $2 trillion in its initial public offering and plans to spend over half a trillion dollars on computing infrastructure, according to a prospectus seen by Reuters. The blockbuster figures have intensified the debate around AI valuations and provided a fresh catalyst for technology stocks.
Prospectus Details Emerge
The document, reported by Reuters on September 29, outlines the AI lab's ambitious financial and technological road map. According to the report, the prospectus contained several key figures:
- Potential IPO Valuation: Over $2 trillion.
- Planned Capital Expenditure: $518 billion for cloud computing and infrastructure obligations in the coming years.
- 2025 Revenue Growth: A 12-fold increase year-over-year.
The filing reportedly frames AI as a technology poised to reshape the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity, or the internet.
Market Reacts to AI Spending Plans
News of the planned spending sent a positive signal through the AI supply chain, boosting related technology stocks. Following the report, European tech shares jumped 2.4% and a U.S. chip index climbed 1.5%.
AdAnalysts noted that Anthropic's commitment to massive capital expenditure reinforces the durability of the current AI investment cycle. "This is positive for the AI trade, since it is fuelled by continued elevated levels of capex spend," said Kathleen Brooks, Research Director at XTB Platform. She added that a lower spending signal could have caused a "wobble" in the sector.
Analysts Weigh Growth Against Risks
While the growth figures captured investor attention, analysts are carefully weighing the company's aggressive expansion against significant financial risks. Michael Field, Chief Equity Strategist at Morningstar, called the 12-fold revenue growth in 2025 "truly remarkable." He suggested that while a $2 trillion valuation "sounds outlandish," it may appear more reasonable on a price-to-sales multiple of around 18-20x.
However, the scale of the company's losses and spending plans has raised concerns. "It’s hard for me to get my arms around companies that are losing billions of dollars, require massive capital expenditure and are looking at equity values of more than $2 trillion," said Newton Jones of Zizmer-Jones Private Wealth Management Group. Others pointed to potential concentration risks, as nearly a quarter of Anthropic's 2025 revenue reportedly came from just two customers.
Despite the red flags, the prevailing sentiment appears to be that the long-term growth potential of AI is sufficient to justify the high upfront costs. "There still will be niggles of concern among some about the huge sums that are projected to be spent even though it is making a loss," said Susannah Streeter, Chief Investment Strategist at Wealth Club. "But that hasn’t caused a flutter of general fear because, overall, there still seems to be a pretty hefty appetite for AI focused investments."
