Amazon to Overhaul AI Strategy, Wind Down Most Nova Models, Report Says

Amazon.com is undertaking a significant revamp of its artificial intelligence strategy, reportedly winding down the majority of its in-house Nova AI models to concentrate on a new, more advanced frontier-model initiative. The strategic pivot was detailed in a Business Insider report on Tuesday, which cited people familiar with the company's plans.

A Shift to Frontier Models

According to the report, Amazon has started the process of deprecating most of its flagship Nova AI models. This includes several key products in its portfolio:

• The high-end Premier and Omni models
• The Reel video-generation model
• The Canvas image-generation model

In their place, Amazon is reportedly reallocating resources to a new frontier-model development project. This effort is said to be a top priority for the company this year and is being led by researcher Pieter Abbeel. A new flagship model from this initiative is expected to be unveiled at Amazon's annual re:Invent conference later this year, Business Insider said.

The move comes as Amazon's Nova models have struggled to generate the same level of public and industry excitement as competing offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. While a major provider of cloud and AI infrastructure for enterprises through Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company has not yet established a breakout large language model.

This strategic change follows other recent adjustments within Amazon's AI divisions. Just last week, the company trimmed jobs in its artificial general intelligence (AGI) group. At the time, a spokesperson stated that the company was sharpening its focus on "the initiatives that matter most for customers." The AGI unit itself has undergone several leadership changes since its formation in 2023, with longtime cloud executive Peter DeSantis taking charge in December.

The Future of the Nova Brand

Despite the overhaul, Amazon is not completely abandoning its AI model development or the Nova brand, the report noted. The new frontier model could potentially be released under the Nova name. Furthermore, services like Nova Forge, which allows customers to build their own AI models using Amazon's technology, are expected to continue.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the Business Insider report. The shift suggests a more focused approach, aiming to compete at the highest end of the AI model market rather than offering a broad suite of less prominent models.
