Background

The U.S. corporate earnings season intensifies this week, with results from Alphabet and Intel poised to be a crucial test for the market's artificial intelligence-driven rally. Investors will closely scrutinize capital spending plans and semiconductor demand to determine if lofty stock valuations can be sustained amid broader economic uncertainty.

AI Spending Under the Microscope

Alphabet's (GOOGL) quarterly report on Wednesday will be a focal point for Wall Street. As an AI "hyperscaler," the $4.3 trillion company's capital expenditures on data centers and AI infrastructure are a key bellwether for the entire technology ecosystem, from chipmakers to software providers.

Any significant change in its spending forecast could have widespread implications. "If Alphabet announces any type of pullbacks with respect to the spending that they’re forecasting around AI, you could see ripple effects across the entire AI ecosystem," said Kevin Mahn, president and chief investment officer at Hennion & Walsh Asset Management, in a comment to Reuters.

High Bar for Chipmakers

Results from semiconductor firms Intel (INTC) and Texas Instruments (TXN) are also highly anticipated, following a massive surge in chip stocks this year. The sector has been a primary beneficiary of AI enthusiasm, but investor expectations are now exceptionally high.

  • The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index has climbed approximately 68% in 2026.
  • Intel shares have soared over 160% this year, while Texas Instruments has gained 68%.

Recent tepid market reactions to strong reports from foreign chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor suggest that investors have already priced in significant growth. This sets a high bar for U.S. firms and increases the potential for volatility, which State Street's Michael Arone noted is amplified by leveraged products tied to the sector.

Corporate Profits to Justify Rally

The focus on tech comes as the broader market relies on strong corporate fundamentals to support its recent gains. The S&P 500 has risen 10% in 2026, trading near record highs, supported by expectations for robust profit growth. According to LSEG IBES data, S&P 500 earnings are projected to have increased by 25.7% in the second quarter.

"The reason [the market] does [reach new heights] is because the fundamentals have been resilient, and the earnings continue to be outstanding," said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management. This earnings strength is seen as a necessary ballast against macroeconomic headwinds, including geopolitical tensions and the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting at the end of July.
