Background

Shares of Alignment Healthcare (ALHC) rebounded Thursday, recovering a portion of the steep losses incurred during the prior session. The stock rose 6.2% to $21.27 in mid-day trading after a sell-off on Wednesday saw the shares fall by roughly 17%, one of the company's worst single-day declines in over two years.

The recovery is being driven by analyst support and a firm denial from the company regarding allegations made in a whistleblower lawsuit that triggered the initial downturn.

Analyst Cites Buying Opportunity

A key catalyst for the rebound was a note from KeyBanc analyst Matthew Gillmor, who reiterated an Overweight rating and a $28 price target on Alignment's stock. According to the note, Gillmor argued that the market's reaction to the lawsuit was unwarranted and that the sharp sell-off presented a buying opportunity for investors.

This vote of confidence from a sell-side analyst helped restore some investor sentiment after Wednesday's precipitous drop.

Lawsuit Allegations and Company Denial

The sell-off was prompted by a lawsuit filed by Hakan Kardes, the company's former Chief Transformation Officer. The suit alleges that Alignment deliberately misclassified routine engineering work, such as software maintenance and bug fixes, as capital expenditures instead of operating costs. This accounting practice, the lawsuit claims, would have the effect of artificially inflating the company's adjusted EBITDA for 2024 and 2025.

Alignment issued a strong rebuttal, stating the allegations are "wholly without merit." The company also disclosed that an independent accounting review had previously examined the claims when they were raised internally by Kardes in May 2025 and had concluded they were unfounded.

Broader Market Support

The stock's recovery was also aided by a constructive backdrop in the broader market, with major U.S. indices trading higher on the day. Other managed-care stocks, including Centene and Humana, also traded positively, indicating favorable sentiment across the sector.

While the analyst support and company denial have helped the stock claw back some of its losses, the pending legal dispute remains a potential overhang for the company.
