AEX Index Closes Flat as Tech Sell-Off Offsets Gains in Other Sectors

Summary
Amsterdam's benchmark AEX index ended Monday's session down a marginal 0.04%, as a steep decline in major semiconductor stocks was counterbalanced by strong performances from companies like Wolters Kluwer and Unilever.
Amsterdam's AEX index finished Monday's session nearly unchanged, closing down a marginal 0.04%. The flat performance, however, masked a significant sell-off in technology shares that was offset by strong gains in publishing and consumer staples companies.
Tech Stocks Slide Amid Sector Divergence
The technology sector weighed heavily on the Amsterdam market, with several major semiconductor firms posting steep losses. Losses were led by ASM International NV (ASMI), which fell 8.55%. Other notable decliners included BE Semiconductor Industries NV (BESI), down 7.03%, and index heavyweight ASML Holding NV (ASML), which dropped 6.13%.
Counterbalancing these losses were strong performances from defensive and information services stocks. The session's top performers on the AEX were:
- Wolters Kluwer (WLSNc), which surged 6.76%.
- Relx PLC (REL), which gained 5.38%.
- Unilever PLC (ULVR), which rose 3.39%.
AdOverall market breadth was negative, with 52 stocks falling and 41 advancing on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, while 11 ended the session unchanged.
Volatility and Broader Markets
Despite the sharp divergence between sectors, market volatility remained subdued. The AEX Volatility index, a measure of implied volatility in AEX options, was unchanged at 21.09, suggesting options traders were not pricing in significant near-term market swings.
In commodities, energy prices moved higher, with Crude oil futures for October delivery rising 2.44% to $102.49 a barrel. In contrast, the December Gold Futures contract fell 1.77%. In currency markets, the US Dollar Index Futures advanced 0.36%, indicating broad strength for the dollar.
