AEX Ends Flat in Mixed Session as Semiconductor Weakness Offsets Gains

The Dutch benchmark AEX index finished Tuesday's session nearly unchanged, posting a marginal gain of 0.06% amid mixed trading. Strength in select sectors, including energy and specialty chemicals, was largely offset by a significant sell-off in major semiconductor companies.
A Divergent Market
Despite the slight uptick in the headline index, market breadth on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange was negative. According to closing data, falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 50 to 42, with 11 issues ending the day unchanged. This divergence indicates that while some large-cap stocks provided support, underlying market sentiment was cautious.
Key individual stock movements highlighted this split performance:
- Top Gainers: Specialty chemicals distributor IMCD NV led the advance, climbing 3.08%. It was followed by CVC Capital Partners PLC, which added 2.85%.
- Top Losers: The semiconductor sector weighed heavily on the market. BE Semiconductor Industries NV (BESI) was the worst performer on the index, falling 3.60%, while ASM International NV declined 2.44%. Investment holding company Exor NV also finished lower, down 2.03%.
AdCommodity and Currency Moves
The energy sector found support from rising oil prices. Crude oil futures for October delivery increased by 0.74% to $92.16 a barrel, and Brent oil for November delivery rose 0.30%. In contrast, the December gold futures contract fell 0.89%.
Currency markets remained relatively quiet, with the EUR/USD and EUR/GBP pairs holding steady. Meanwhile, market volatility was subdued, as the AEX Volatility index ended the day unchanged at 21.09, suggesting a lack of significant new investor anxiety.
