AeroVironment Secures $117.3 Million U.S. Army Contract for P550 Drone Systems

Shares of AeroVironment Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) gained in premarket trading Monday after the defense technology company announced it has secured a $117.3 million contract from the U.S. Army for its P550 drone system.

The award covers the delivery of 82 P550 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) unmanned aerial systems (UAS). According to the company's announcement, this order represents the initial full-rate procurement of the P550 system to support the Army’s Battalion Reconnaissance effort.

The contract was awarded through the Army’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Marketplace initiative following a competitive process under its Long Range Reconnaissance program. This program is designed to field adaptable and advanced capabilities for modern warfare scenarios.
