ADTRAN Shares Plunge After Company Slashes Q2 Revenue and Margin Outlook

ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) stock plunged in morning trading after the communications equipment provider released preliminary second-quarter results that fell significantly short of its previous financial guidance, citing a major customer project delay and unexpectedly high costs.
Preliminary Results Miss Guidance
The company's pre-announcement on July 22 revealed misses on every key metric ahead of its formal earnings report. ADTRAN said it now expects revenue and profitability to be well below both its own forecast and Wall Street estimates.
- Revenue: Now projected at $280.0 million to $282.0 million, below the guided range of $283.0 million to $303.0 million and the consensus analyst estimate of approximately $293.4 million.
- Non-GAAP Operating Margin: Expected to be just 3.5% to 4.0%, a sharp decline from the previously guided range of 5.0% to 9.0%.
- Earnings Per Share: Non-GAAP diluted EPS is forecast at $0.03 to $0.05, also below expectations, while the company projects a GAAP net loss per share of $0.12 to $0.14.
Customer Delay and Rising Costs Cited
AdManagement attributed the disappointing forecast to two primary factors: a project delay from a single, significant customer and higher-than-anticipated component and freight costs. The company's peers in the networking equipment sector have not issued similar warnings, suggesting the issue is idiosyncratic to ADTRAN rather than a signal of a broader industry slowdown.
Market Reaction and Dilution Concerns
Investors reacted swiftly to the news, sending the stock down by nearly 20% and pushing it toward the lower end of its 52-week range. The selloff was driven almost entirely by the company-specific warning, as the broader S&P 500 was flat and the NASDAQ saw only a minor slip.
Compounding investor concerns was a recent filing for an automatic mixed securities shelf registration on July 17. This move, which creates the potential for future share issuance and dilution, had already introduced a layer of caution for the stock ahead of the negative pre-announcement.
