Adobe Stock Needs Proof of Turnaround, Not Just Buybacks, Bernstein Says

Adobe Inc. (ADBE) faces a critical period where investors are demanding tangible proof of a strategic recovery before re-engaging with the stock, according to a recent analysis from Bernstein. While a lower valuation and share buybacks may offer some support, analysts noted that a meaningful rerating depends on the company successfully navigating key challenges related to leadership, strategy, and execution.
Three Hurdles to a Rerating
Bernstein outlined three specific "gates" Adobe must pass to restore investor confidence. The firm views the stock as a "show-me" story, where announcements alone are insufficient.
- Leadership Clarity: Following a CEO transition, the new management team must establish credibility. Bernstein described the current situation as a "leadership vacuum" that is acting as a near-term drag on sentiment.
- Strategic Communication: The company needs to provide a clearer explanation of how it plans to compete in an environment increasingly shaped by AI and consumption-based business models. A lack of transparency risks fueling investor skepticism.
- Execution Evidence: Ultimately, Adobe's strategy must translate into durable growth. This includes improving recurring-revenue trends and demonstrating that AI can expand its market rather than compress pricing.
Valuation and Financial Levers
The argument for limited downside in Adobe's stock rests on two main factors, according to Bernstein. The first is its compressed valuation, as the stock's multiple has fallen due to investor fears about AI-driven disruption and weakening growth prospects.
AdSecond, the company's use of share buybacks can provide financial support by lifting earnings per share (EPS) through a reduced share count. However, Bernstein cautioned that repurchases do not create a guaranteed price floor and are not a substitute for fundamental business improvement. Only sustained earnings growth can truly restore investor confidence.
Market Sentiment Remains Cautious
Reflecting the market's cautious stance, Adobe stock has struggled this year, remaining down 28.07% year-to-date as of September 14, 2026. The bull case for the stock hinges on a successful leadership reset, a credible strategy, and a return to stable growth.
Conversely, the bear case posits that buybacks will only soften the stock's decline while competitive pressures from AI gradually erode Adobe's core growth engine. Bernstein concluded that its view would become more constructive only if the bull case begins to materialize with concrete evidence.
