Academy Sports Stock Surges After Upbeat Earnings and Raised Guidance

Academy Sports & Outdoors (NASDAQ: ASO) stock surged 13.0% in pre-market trading after the company released a second-quarter earnings report that surpassed analyst expectations and included an upward revision to its full-year guidance.
Strong Results and Upgraded Outlook
The company announced net sales of approximately $1.60 billion for the second fiscal quarter, a year-over-year increase of roughly 3.0%, according to its earnings release. A key highlight for investors was a return to positive comparable store sales, which management described as the best performance on that metric in several quarters.
Based on the strong quarterly performance, Academy Sports raised its full-year forecast. The retailer now expects:
- Net sales between $6.23 billion and $6.36 billion
- Comparable sales to be in a range of flat to up 2.0%
- Adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $6.40 to $6.80
These updated projections are above the company's prior guidance and exceed the Wall Street consensus estimates heading into the report.
Market Reaction and Context
AdThe positive financial results and outlook triggered a significant rally in the company's shares, a move that stood in sharp contrast to the broader market, where major indices like the S&P 500 and Dow Jones were trading lower. The stock's pre-market gain also substantially outpaced the roughly 7.5% move that options markets had implied for the earnings event.
The results provided a direct challenge to a recent BMO Capital research note that had initiated coverage with a cautious "Market Perform" rating, citing concerns over the company's multi-year comparable sales trends.
Capital Returns and Expansion
Alongside its earnings, Academy Sports announced continued capital returns to its investors. The Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.15 per share, and the company noted its ongoing share repurchase program. Management also highlighted an accelerating store expansion plan, with 20 to 25 new locations slated to open in fiscal 2026.
Despite the upbeat report, CFO Carl Ford stated that the company "remain[s] prudent about the macroenvironment," and the updated guidance accounts for the belief that consumers will face financial pressure for the remainder of the year.
