Background

Aberdeen Group plc has appointed veteran financial services executive Torbjörn Magnusson as its chair-designate in a planned leadership succession. Magnusson has joined the company's board as a non-executive director and will assume the role of chair following regulatory approvals, the firm announced on Wednesday.

Leadership Transition

The appointment follows the company's announcement last year that its current chair, Sir Douglas Flint, would step down by the 2026 annual general meeting. Jonathan Asquith, who has been serving as interim chair, will continue in the role until Magnusson’s appointment as chair becomes effective.

"We are delighted to have Torbjörn joining the Board as Non-Executive Director and Chair-designate," Asquith said in a statement. "He is a highly regarded and versatile international business leader who brings more than 30 years of leadership experience."

Magnusson's Extensive Experience

Magnusson has held numerous senior positions across the European financial services industry. His career includes significant leadership roles at major Nordic institutions.

Key positions from his career include:

Outlook and Compensation

Upon assuming the role, Magnusson will receive an annual fee of £475,000. He will be tasked with guiding the board as the asset manager navigates a complex market environment.

"Aberdeen has transformed its performance materially over the last few years, building the foundations for long-term value creation," Magnusson stated. "I am very much looking forward to working with the Board, and with Jason and his management team, to help the company continue that progress and achieve its ambitions."
