YouTube Unveils Generative AI Tools and Expanded Shopping Features for Creators

Summary
The Alphabet-owned video platform announced a suite of new AI-powered creation and moderation tools, alongside a significant expansion of its e-commerce affiliate program, at its annual 'Made on YouTube' event.
Alphabet's (GOOGL) YouTube on Wednesday announced a slate of new features powered by generative artificial intelligence designed to assist creators, alongside a significant expansion of its e-commerce and shopping capabilities. The new tools, unveiled at the company's annual "Made on YouTube" event in New York, are aimed at streamlining content creation and opening up new monetization avenues on the platform.
AI Integration for Content Creation
YouTube is integrating AI more deeply into its creator workflow. The company revealed several new tools for its YouTube Studio and Shorts platforms, intended to simplify the editing and management process.
Key AI-powered features include:
- A Gemini-powered assistant to help edit clips, trim pauses, and sync music in Shorts and the YouTube Create app.
- New additions to YouTube Studio that provide feedback on video drafts and suggest channel-appropriate thumbnails.
- The ability for creators to test up to three different versions of a video cut to see which performs best.
- An opt-in AI comment moderation system that adapts to a creator's preferences, as well as enhanced likeness-protection tools using voice and facial detection.
Expanding E-Commerce Capabilities
AdThe video platform is also making a significant push to bolster its shopping features, aiming to convert viewership into sales. YouTube announced it will expand its Shopping affiliate program to 35 countries by the end of the year.
According to the company, more than 1.3 million creators are already enrolled in the program. In a move to further integrate with major retailers, YouTube will soon allow creators in India and Brazil to tag products from Amazon. Additionally, product tags will begin showing localized offers to viewers in different markets, personalizing the shopping experience.
New Features for Viewers
Alongside the creator-focused tools, YouTube introduced new features to enhance user experience and personalization. U.S. users will gain access to "Custom Feeds" on web, mobile, and TV, allowing them to create homepage tabs tailored to specific interests like documentaries or DIY videos.
The platform's "Ask YouTube" feature is also being upgraded to handle shopping-related queries and follow-up questions. This will include the ability to generate product-comparison tables and accept voice commands from users on TV, signaling a move towards a more interactive and commerce-driven viewing experience.
