Yancoal Shares Hit One-Month High on Record Q2 Production, Stronger Prices

Summary
The Australian coal miner reported a 20% quarterly jump in saleable production and a 9% increase in realized prices, leading it to signal that full-year output will be in the upper half of its guidance range.
Shares of Yancoal Australia Ltd (ASX:YAL) climbed to their highest level in nearly a month on Tuesday after the coal producer announced record second-quarter output and a significant increase in realised prices, prompting a more optimistic full-year forecast.
Record Production and Sales
Yancoal reported that its attributable saleable coal production for the second quarter reached a record 10.8 million tonnes, a 20% increase from the previous quarter. The company attributed this growth to a strategic shift from waste removal to coal mining across most of its operations. Attributable coal sales saw an even larger jump, rising 41% to 11.6 million tonnes.
According to Chief Executive Sharif Burra, the strong quarter contributed to a record first-half attributable saleable coal production of 19.8 million tonnes, a 5% increase from the prior year. This performance puts Yancoal on track to surpass its record production from last year, the company stated.
Price Strength and Improved Outlook
The miner also benefited from stronger commodity markets, with its average realised coal price rising 9% quarter-on-quarter to A$160 per tonne. The increase was supported by an 11% rise in realised thermal coal prices and a 3% gain in metallurgical coal prices.
AdFollowing the strong operational performance, Yancoal maintained its full-year production guidance of 36.5 million to 40.5 million tonnes but said output is now likely to finish in the upper half of that range. The company also updated its financial guidance:
- Capital expenditure is now expected to be at the low end of its A$750 million to A$900 million forecast.
- Cash operating costs are forecast to be in the upper half of the guided range, an improvement from the previously expected top end, citing moderating diesel price pressures.
Market Reaction
Investors responded positively to the operational update. Yancoal's shares climbed 3.7% to A$5.89, their highest point since June 22. The stock's performance outpaced the broader S&P/ASX 200 index, which was little changed on the day.
