Background

Polish stocks advanced at the close of trading on Monday, with the benchmark WIG30 index rising 0.47% to reach a new all-time high. The rally was spearheaded by significant gains in the energy, media, and basic materials sectors.

Monday's Trading Session

The Warsaw Stock Exchange saw a mixed session, though the main index posted a notable gain. Market breadth was narrow, with 263 stocks advancing compared to 254 decliners, while 128 stocks ended the day unchanged. This indicates the gains were concentrated in specific sectors rather than being a market-wide phenomenon.

Key Stock Movements

Energy stocks were the standout performers leading the index higher. The session's top movers on the WIG30 included:

  • PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA (WA:PGE): Rallied 4.94% to close at 13.17, a 5-year high for the stock.
  • Tauron Polska Energia SA (WA:TPE): Gained 4.80% to end the day at 9.04.
  • MODIVO SA (WA:MDVP): Increased by 3.91% to finish at 91.32.

Broader Market Context

The strength in Polish energy equities coincided with a rise in global oil prices. Crude oil futures for October delivery were up approximately 1.89% to $93.21 a barrel, while Brent oil for November delivery rose about 1.72% to $97.94 a barrel. In contrast, gold futures for December delivery fell 0.40%.

In the currency markets, the Polish zloty showed mixed results. The EUR/PLN pair edged up 0.13% to 4.31, while the USD/PLN pair was largely unchanged at 3.71.
