Wheat Futures Dip on Technical Selling, Weaker Crude Oil

Summary
Chicago wheat futures edged lower Wednesday, pressured by technical selling and a downturn in the crude oil market. However, concerns over global supply, including a projected drop in Canadian output, limited the decline.
Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat futures declined on Wednesday, influenced by a wave of technical selling and weakness in the broader crude oil market. The drop in energy prices often signals lower input and transportation costs for agricultural commodities, placing downward pressure on grain futures.
Market Performance
The most-active wheat contracts saw modest declines during morning trading. The price action was mixed across different wheat classes, reflecting varied market fundamentals.
- CBOT December soft red winter wheat (WZ26) fell 1.5 cents to $7.27 per bushel.
- Kansas City December hard red winter wheat (KWZ26) declined 1.25 cents to $7.95 per bushel.
- In contrast, Minneapolis December spring wheat (MWEZ26) gained 2.5 cents, settling at $7.51 per bushel.
Supply Concerns Provide Support
Losses in the wheat market were limited by persistent concerns over the global supply outlook. Traders remain focused on potential disruptions to grain exports from the Black Sea region, a critical hub for global wheat trade.
AdExpectations of lower crop yields in several major producing countries have also provided a floor for prices, preventing a steeper sell-off.
Canadian Production Forecast Lowered
Adding to supply-side tightness, a new government forecast pointed to a smaller Canadian harvest. Statistics Canada released a survey on Wednesday projecting the country's 2026 wheat production will fall by 10.9% compared to 2025, to a total of 36.1 million metric tons.
The agency noted that its forecast was based in part on satellite and agroclimatic data, providing a data-driven outlook on one of the world's top wheat exporters.
