Background

West African crude oil differentials were largely unchanged on Friday, concluding a week of subdued trading activity in the physical market. The stability in the spot market contrasted with a rally in global oil benchmarks, which were buoyed by rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Subdued Spot Market

Market sources reported that the West African crude market was generally quiet throughout the week, according to Investing.com. This low level of trading activity kept spot price differentials for key regional grades mostly flat.

This muted regional activity occurred even as global benchmarks posted strong weekly gains.

  • Brent crude futures rose by approximately 3.4% for the week.
  • West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures gained around 4%.

As a result, some market participants are reportedly turning their attention to West African crude grades as a potential alternative to Middle Eastern supplies, should transit through the strait be impeded.
