Weichai Power Shares Surge on Customer's $2.4 Billion AWS Generator Deal

Summary
The Chinese engine maker's stock rallied after its U.S. customer, Generac, secured a major contract to supply backup power generators for Amazon's data centers, highlighting strong demand from the AI sector.
Shares of Weichai Power (2338.HK) surged on Thursday, driven by a major supply agreement signed by one of its key U.S. customers with Amazon Web Services. The development underscores the growing demand for power generation equipment to support the expansion of artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.
Generac Secures Major AWS Contract
Weichai Power's stock jumped 4.4% to close at HK$30.86 in Hong Kong, significantly outperforming the broader Hang Seng index, which fell 0.9%. The rally followed news that U.S.-based generator manufacturer Generac signed a significant pact to supply Amazon Web Services (AWS) with backup power generators for its data centers.
According to reports, the initial value of the contract is $2.4 billion. The agreement also includes Amazon taking an equity stake in Generac, signaling a deep strategic partnership between the two companies.
The Weichai Connection
The deal is a significant indirect win for Weichai Power. Generac's generator line is built on Weichai's Baudoin M55 engine platform, meaning the substantial AWS order is expected to translate directly into increased engine orders for the Chinese manufacturer.
AdThis event reinforces investor confidence in Weichai's strategic position as a critical supplier to the data center industry. The market has been increasingly focused on companies that can address the so-called "AI-driven electricity gap," or the massive new power demands created by AI workloads.
A Year of Strong Performance
Thursday's gains add to an already stellar run for Weichai's stock, which has benefited from the ongoing AI boom. Over the past 12 months, the company's Hong Kong-listed shares have nearly tripled in value.
Its shares listed in Shenzhen (000338.SZ) have also performed exceptionally well, jumping more than 130% over the same period. The sustained rally reflects the market's pricing-in of Weichai's growing exposure to the high-demand data center and power generation sectors.
