Washington Post Appoints Interim Chief Jeff D’Onofrio as Permanent CEO

The Washington Post has officially named Jeff D’Onofrio as its publisher and chief executive officer, solidifying his leadership after he served in an interim capacity for seven months. Owner Jeff Bezos confirmed the appointment in an email to staff on Wednesday.
Leadership Solidified Amid Turmoil
D’Onofrio first joined The Post as chief financial officer in June 2025. He stepped into the interim CEO role following the departure of William Lewis, who resigned in February after a tenure that began in January 2024. Lewis's resignation came shortly after the newspaper announced major layoffs affecting approximately one-third of its staff.
A Renewed Focus on Profitability
The leadership change occurs as the storied newspaper seeks to stabilize its finances. A spokesperson for The Washington Post told Bloomberg that the company is on track to break even and is on its closest path to profitability in five years.
AdKey financial indicators from the company this year include:
- The sale of more than 300,000 individual subscriptions.
- A strategic goal to achieve break-even financial performance.
Navigating a Challenging Environment
D’Onofrio takes the helm permanently as the Pulitzer Prize-winning institution navigates both financial and political headwinds. In recent years, the newspaper has contended with internal and external challenges, including Bezos's decision to cease presidential endorsements and staff and subscriber backlash over changes to its opinion section.
