Warren Buffett Halts Donations to Gates Foundation, Citing Epstein Revelations

Summary
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett has ended his two-decade philanthropic partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, redirecting a nearly $6 billion stock donation to his family's charities following revelations about Bill Gates's association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Warren Buffett has ended his long-standing philanthropic partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a decision the Berkshire Hathaway chairman said was prompted by revelations concerning Bill Gates's interactions with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The move concludes a two-decade collaboration that has channeled tens of billions of dollars into global health and development.
A Shift in Philanthropy
In a departure from his long-established practice, Buffett did not include the Gates Foundation in his latest annual donation of Berkshire Hathaway stock, valued at nearly $6 billion. The contribution, announced Tuesday, will instead be directed to four charitable foundations run by his children: Susie, Howard, and Peter Buffett.
In interview excerpts aired on CNBC, Buffett, 95, stated he informed Bill Gates of his decision three weeks ago during a meeting in Omaha. "I reevaluated my whole situation," Buffett said. "It did not come as a surprise."
Rationale for the Decision
AdBuffett directly linked his reevaluation to official inquiries into Gates's relationship with Epstein. "I had read what Congress came up with. I’d read everything," he told CNBC. The decision follows the U.S. Department of Justice's release of files on the matter in February and a congressional investigation that included a meeting with Gates last month.
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has repeatedly expressed regret for his association with Epstein and has not been accused of any crimes. Epstein died in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Context of the Partnership
Since 2006, Warren Buffett had been a cornerstone of the Gates Foundation's endowment, donating more than $47 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock to the organization. This shift marks a significant change in the landscape of mega-philanthropy, redirecting one of the world's largest charitable contributions toward Buffett's family-run foundations.
