Background

Volkswagen Group announced it will deepen its partnership with Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion to accelerate the development of a European battery supply chain, while also selling a 5.3% equity stake in the company. According to a company statement, the German automaker will maintain a significant stake in Gotion following the transaction.

European Production Expansion

The expanded collaboration will establish three joint ventures located in Valencia, Spain; Surany, Slovakia; and Kenitra, Morocco. The partnership will focus on the industrial production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and cathode active materials.

Volkswagen designated the Valencia site to become a European production hub for LFP batteries, a critical component for the automaker's electric vehicle strategy. This move aims to localize the supply chain and bolster battery production capacity within the region.

Financial Commitments

The agreement outlines significant cross-investments into the joint venture sites. The financial structure for the new entities includes:

  • Gotion will invest approximately €1.1 billion to acquire its 49% stake in the Valencia facility.
  • Volkswagen's battery unit, PowerCo, is set to contribute around €470 million by 2030 to acquire its 49% stake in the Surany and Kenitra locations.

Equity Stake Adjustment

Concurrent with the operational expansion, Volkswagen is reducing its direct holding in Gotion. The automaker said the sale of the 5.3% stake is intended to "optimize equity structures and support long-term strategic synergies." The move suggests a strategic realignment of capital while still leveraging Gotion's manufacturing expertise through the joint ventures.
