Viking Holdings Shares Climb After Announcing $1 Billion Stock Buyback

Viking Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:VIK) announced a $1 billion share repurchase program on Thursday, sending its shares up 2.1% in after-hours trading. The cruise operator's board of directors authorized the plan to buy back the company's outstanding ordinary shares over time.
Details of the Repurchase Program
In a statement, Viking said the authorization provides the company with the flexibility to return capital to shareholders. The company emphasized that it will continue to invest in its primary growth drivers, including its fleet and guest experience.
The repurchases may be conducted through several methods, subject to market conditions and legal requirements. These include:
- Open market purchases
- Privately negotiated transactions
- Accelerated share repurchase (ASR) transactions
AdWhat It Means for Investors
Share buyback programs are often interpreted by the market as a sign of management's confidence in the company's financial health and future prospects, suggesting they believe the stock is undervalued. By reducing the number of shares in circulation, buybacks can also increase earnings per share (EPS), a key metric for investors.
Viking specified that the program does not obligate it to acquire any particular amount of its shares. The company will determine the timing, price, and volume of any repurchases based on business, market, and economic conditions. The program can be modified, suspended, or terminated by the company at any time.
