Vicor Stock Surges After Doubling Q3 Revenue Growth Forecast on Patent Royalties

Summary
The power systems company more than doubled its sequential revenue growth forecast for the third quarter, citing new royalty income from its patented technology used in AI data centers.
Vicor Corporation (VICR) shares surged more than 12% in after-hours trading after the company significantly increased its revenue guidance for the third quarter. In a press release, Vicor announced it now expects sequential revenue growth of more than 20%, a sharp upward revision from its previous forecast of nearly 10%.
Guidance Lifted on Licensing Deals
The upgraded forecast is directly attributed to royalties generated from the company's non-exclusive Vertical Power Delivery (VPD) licensing program. Vicor confirmed that four leading companies, described as major OEMs and hyperscalers, have now secured licenses for its patented power system technology.
This new, high-margin revenue stream provides investors with a concrete catalyst that was not previously priced into the stock. The announcement comes on the heels of other positive developments, including a recently granted VPD license to a major AI OEM on September 16.
CEO Cites Patent Enforcement
Vicor CEO Patrizio Vinciarelli stated that the licensing momentum was partly driven by enforcement of the company's intellectual property. He noted that some hyperscalers first approached Vicor after their computing systems faced importation bans for infringing on the company's patents.
Ad"Since the first patent to VPD was only recently asserted, it is still possible to secure a license at an early stage of escalation with a low royalty rate," Vinciarelli said in the release. The company also warned that unlicensed suppliers risk supply disruptions and monetary damages, signaling a potential for its royalty base to expand further as other firms seek to avoid infringement penalties.
Market Reaction and Context
Vicor's stock jump was a stark contrast to the broader market, as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished the regular session nearly unchanged. The after-hours move sent shares toward $251.50, well above the session high of $232.74.
The guidance increase adds to a series of positive updates from the company, which recently announced:
- A $150 million share repurchase authorization.
- The acquisition of two properties in New Hampshire for new chip fabrication facilities to meet demand driven by artificial intelligence.
