Background

Vantage Markets, a multi-asset broker, announced on July 4 the launch of a new contract for difference (CFD) product that allows for continuous trading of gold. The new instrument, XAUUSD247, enables eligible clients to trade the precious metal against the U.S. dollar 24/7, including over the weekend when traditional markets are closed.

Product Details

The offering is a distinct over-the-counter (OTC) CFD product made available by Vantage, separate from exchange-traded futures. According to the company's announcement, the product will be accessible on the MT5 and TradingView platforms, as well as the Vantage App.

Key features of the XAUUSD247 product include:

  • Contract Size: A smaller one-ounce contract size, compared to the 100-ounce contract for the firm's standard XAUUSD product.
  • Leverage: Tiered leverage of up to 100x may be available, subject to account type and position size.
  • Cost Structure: No separate trading commission is applied, though spreads, financing charges, and other costs may be incurred.

Market Context and Risk Management

The move by Vantage comes as CME Group has also announced plans to expand trading hours for some of its gold futures products, pending regulatory review, signaling a broader industry trend toward extended market access. Vantage's product, however, is a distinct OTC offering.

"XAUUSD247 provides eligible clients with access to gold CFDs beyond standard market hours, supported by transparent product mechanics and clearly defined trading controls," said Marc Despallieres, Chief Executive Officer at Vantage, in the company's statement.

To manage risk, the product incorporates net and gross exposure limits at the account level. Vantage stated that if an account reaches its applicable exposure threshold, it will be placed into a "close-only" mode until the exposure is reduced. The company noted that trading conditions such as leverage and spreads may vary by client region and account type.

Implications for Traders

The introduction of 24/7 gold CFD trading provides traders with the flexibility to react to geopolitical or economic news that occurs over the weekend. This continuous access allows for managing positions or entering new ones outside of the standard Monday-to-Friday trading week, though it also introduces exposure to price movements during periods of potentially lower liquidity.

CFDs are complex, leveraged instruments that carry a high level of risk. The availability of around-the-clock trading may not be suitable for all investors, who should consider their risk tolerance and understanding of how these products work.
