US Stock Futures Pare Gains After August CPI Shows Slightly Hotter Core Inflation

U.S. stock index futures pared some of their earlier gains on Friday after the release of the August inflation report, which showed consumer prices largely in line with expectations but revealed a slightly faster-than-anticipated monthly rise in a key underlying measure.
August Inflation Report
A report from the Labor Department showed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August rose 3.4% on an annual basis and 0.4% month-over-month, both matching consensus estimates.
However, the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, increased 0.3% on a monthly basis. This was slightly higher than the 0.2% rise that economists had expected. The annual core CPI figure was 2.4%, in line with forecasts.
Key inflation figures for August include:
- Headline CPI (Annual): +3.4% (vs. +3.4% expected)
- Headline CPI (Monthly): +0.4% (vs. +0.4% expected)
- Core CPI (Annual): +2.4% (vs. +2.4% expected)
- Core CPI (Monthly): +0.3% (vs. +0.2% expected)
Market Reaction
AdThe market's initial positive sentiment was tempered following the release. While futures remained in positive territory, they pulled back from session highs as investors digested the details, particularly the hotter-than-expected monthly core inflation figure, a key metric for the Federal Reserve.
As of 8:34 a.m. ET, futures contracts tied to the major indices reflected the moderated gains:
- Dow E-minis: +347 points (+0.67%)
- S&P 500 E-minis: +46 points (+0.61%)
- Nasdaq 100 E-minis: +213 points (+0.73%)
Context for Investors
Inflation data is a critical input for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions. While the headline figures were in line, the slight acceleration in the monthly core reading can signal persistent underlying price pressures, which policymakers monitor closely. This report will be a key piece of information for the central bank as it assesses the economic landscape ahead of its next policy meeting.
