U.S. Stock Futures Hold Steady as Inflation Cools, Chip Sector Slides

Summary
U.S. stock futures were flat as softer-than-expected inflation data tempered Fed rate hike fears, but ongoing geopolitical tensions and a sell-off in semiconductor stocks capped investor sentiment.
U.S. stock index futures were little changed in Wednesday evening trading as softer-than-expected inflation data cooled investor fears of an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate hike. However, persistent geopolitical tensions and a significant sell-off in the semiconductor sector kept bullish sentiment in check.
By 8:06 PM ET (00:06 GMT), S&P 500 Futures, Nasdaq 100 Futures, and Dow Jones Futures were all up approximately 0.1%, according to data from Investing.com.
Inflation Data Eases Rate Hike Fears
Recent government reports showed that both producer price index (PPI) and consumer price index (CPI) inflation for June came in softer than analysts had forecast. The data helped alleviate market concerns that a recent bump in energy prices would force the Fed to raise interest rates as soon as its July meeting.
In a recent Congressional testimony, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the central bank's commitment to its 2% inflation target but offered no clear signals on the immediate path of monetary policy. Following the inflation prints, traders pared back their bets on a near-term rate hike, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
Chip Sector Under Pressure
AdSemiconductor stocks were a notable weak spot in the market, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index falling more than 2% during Wednesday's session. The decline came amid growing doubts among investors about whether high valuations, fueled by a surge in artificial intelligence development, are sustainable.
Even a strong earnings report from ASML Holding NV, a top manufacturer of chipmaking equipment, failed to reverse the sector's downward trend. Market participants are now focused on the upcoming quarterly earnings from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, for further cues on AI-related demand.
Market Backdrop and Geopolitics
Investors continue to monitor geopolitical developments, including ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which have kept oil prices elevated. The broader market indexes had advanced during Wednesday's main trading session, supported in part by a series of strong earnings reports from major banks.
The corporate earnings season is set to continue in earnest, with key reports expected from companies including Unitedhealth Group, GE Aerospace, Netflix Inc, and Abbott Laboratories.
