Background

The United States military is set to begin enforcing a maritime blockade on Iran starting Tuesday, an action that will cover all of the country's ports, oil terminals, and coastal regions. The U.S. Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) announced the move in an advisory on Monday.

Scope of the Blockade

The blockade will apply to all vessel traffic, regardless of its flag, and is scheduled to take effect at 2000 GMT on July 14, according to the JMIC statement. The advisory covers the entirety of Iran's maritime territory.

However, the center specified that neutral commercial transit through the crucial Strait of Hormuz will not be impeded, provided the vessels are traveling to or from non-Iranian destinations. This strait is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

Enforcement and Consequences

The JMIC warned that any vessel suspected of attempting to enter or depart the blockaded area without authorization will face serious consequences. The advisory stated these vessels are "subject to interception, diversion, and capture."

Furthermore, the statement underscored the potential for military action to ensure compliance. "Non-compliant vessels may be legally compelled with force," the JMIC said. This development represents a significant escalation of maritime military posture in one of the world's most vital energy corridors, creating substantial uncertainty for shipping and energy markets.
