U.K. stocks closed significantly lower on Friday, capping the week with a broad-based sell-off that saw the country's main equities benchmark retreat. According to data from Investing.com, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 index fell 1.67% by the end of the trading session in London.
Sector Weakness Drives Decline
The downturn was led by notable weakness in several key sectors. Shares in the Mobile Telecommunications, General Retailers, and Automobiles & Parts industries were among the primary drivers of the index's decline, data showed.
Market breadth on the London Stock Exchange confirmed the negative sentiment. Falling stocks overwhelmingly outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 1,119 to 572, with an additional 555 stocks ending the session unchanged.
Key Stock Movers
Several large-cap companies experienced significant price movements during Friday's session. The worst performers on the index included:
Ad- Airtel Africa Plc (LON:AAF), which plunged 11.27%.
- Coca Cola HBC AG (LON:CCH), declining 7.52%.
- BT Group PLC (LON:BT), which fell 5.45%.
Despite the widespread losses, a few companies bucked the trend. The top performers included precious metals miner Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES), up 1.03%, retailer Frasers Group PLC (LON:FRAS), which added 0.90%, and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca PLC (LON:AZN), rising 0.58%.
Broader Markets
In commodities, prices were slightly lower. Crude oil for October delivery fell 0.38% to $101.52 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract slipped 0.51% to $104.29 a barrel. Gold Futures for December delivery were down a marginal 0.06%.
