Market Performance
Selling pressure was widespread across the London Stock Exchange, with decliners significantly outnumbering advancers by a margin of 1,136 to 564, while 544 stocks closed unchanged, according to data from Investing.com. The primary drivers of the downturn were sector-specific weaknesses in Mining, Fixed Line Telecommunications, and Industrial Engineering.
Among the session's most notable decliners were:
- Rentokil Initial PLC (RTO): fell 4.30% to 309.20, hitting a new 52-week low.
- Rightmove PLC (RMV): declined 4.27% to end the day at 448.00.
- Standard Life PLC (SDLF): dropped 4.21% to close at 887.00.
Sector Divergence and Commodities
AdDespite the broader market slump, some companies posted strong gains, buoyed by developments in commodity markets. Energy giant BP PLC (BP) rose 2.62% as crude oil prices surged. The November WTI Crude contract jumped 4.80% to $96.58 a barrel, while the Brent oil contract gained 4.72% to $107.95 a barrel.
Other top performers on the index included JD Sports Fashion PLC (JD), which climbed 2.99%, and Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC (HIK), which added 1.88%. In contrast, Gold Futures for December delivery fell 0.72%.
Currency and Forex Markets
In foreign exchange trading, major currency pairs saw minimal movement. The GBP/USD was little changed, edging up 0.18% to 1.32, while the EUR/GBP also remained flat with a 0.13% gain to 0.86. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, advanced 0.24% to 101.05.
