UBS Endorses New Zealand Dollar Following Central Bank Rate Hike

UBS has reiterated its favorable view on the New Zealand dollar, citing the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's recent interest rate hike and its signal of further monetary policy tightening ahead.
RBNZ Delivers Widely Expected Rate Hike
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) raised its official cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%, a move that was in line with consensus market expectations. The decision marked the central bank's first rate increase in three years, reflecting a shift to a more hawkish policy stance.
In its accompanying statement, the RBNZ assessed current policy settings as still "accommodative." The bank signaled that further tightening will likely be necessary to return inflation to the 2% midpoint of its target range, underpinning expectations for future rate increases.
UBS Outlines Bullish NZD Stance
In a research note published after the central bank's decision, UBS said it maintains an "attractive view" on the New Zealand dollar within its global foreign exchange preferences. The bank's outlook is supported by the RBNZ's clear intention to continue normalizing policy.
AdFor investors, UBS advised that those seeking to diversify holdings away from the U.S. dollar should consider holding the New Zealand dollar on an unhedged basis. The bank also noted it expects the RBNZ to deliver its next rate hike in September.
Market Implications and Trade Ideas
For a specific currency pair trade, UBS expressed a preference for a short position in the Australian dollar against the New Zealand dollar (AUD/NZD). This strategy is a bet on the relative strength of the NZD over the AUD, driven by the differing monetary policy outlooks of the two nations' central banks.
The firm set a target for the AUD/NZD pair at 1.18, with a recommended stop-loss at 1.24, according to its research note.
