Sector and Stock Performance
The decline was led by losses in the Materials, Clean Technology, and Information Technology sectors, according to market data from the close. Market breadth was negative, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by a margin of 527 to 447, while 82 issues ended unchanged.
Key individual movers included:
- Top Gainers: TFI International Inc. (TSX:TFII) surged 7.27%, Descartes Systems Group Inc. (TSX:DSG) added 6.40%, and Constellation Software Inc. (TSX:CSU) rose 5.75%.
- Top Losers: BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB) saw a significant drop of 14.23%, while Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS) and Hammond Power Solutions Inc. (TSX:HPSa) fell 9.30% and 8.95%, respectively.
Commodities and Volatility
AdWeakness in commodity markets contributed to the negative sentiment, a key factor for the resource-heavy TSX. Gold Futures for August delivery fell 1.81% to $3,978.30 a troy ounce. In energy markets, Crude oil for August delivery dipped 0.55% to $79.16 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract was down 0.61%.
Investor uncertainty saw a slight increase, as reflected by the S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of index options. The volatility index was up 0.43% to 14.00 at the close.
Currency Markets
In foreign exchange, the Canadian dollar showed minimal movement against its major counterparts. The CAD/USD pair was nearly flat, trading around 0.71, while the CAD/EUR was also little changed at 0.62. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index Futures, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, advanced 0.28% to 100.55.
