Background

Danish insurer Tryg A/S (CSE:TRYG) reported second-quarter profit above analyst forecasts, as a strong performance from its investment portfolio offset the financial impact of a large legal provision. The company's results demonstrated resilience in its underlying insurance business and a solid capital position.

Earnings Detail

Tryg posted a profit after tax of 874 million Danish crowns (DKK), significantly higher than the median analyst forecast of 722 million DKK, according to company-provided consensus figures. Pre-tax profit for the quarter was 1.08 billion DKK, also beating the consensus estimate of 939 million DKK.

The outperformance was largely driven by net investment income, which came in at 262 million DKK, more than double the 130 million DKK analysts had anticipated. The insurer noted this result highlighted "the strength of Tryg’s low-risk investment approach in volatile markets."

Underwriting Performance and Legal Charge

The company's insurance service result fell to 1.19 billion DKK from 2.31 billion DKK a year earlier. This decline was entirely due to a provision booked following an April 28 Danish Supreme Court ruling on workers’ compensation, which Tryg said was fully recognized in its Q2 accounts.

Excluding this one-time charge, the underlying insurance service result showed growth, rising approximately 4% year-on-year to 2.39 billion DKK. The adjusted combined ratio, a key measure of underwriting profitability, was 77.4%, a slight increase from 77.2% in the same period last year. The reported combined ratio, including the provision, was 88.8%, matching analyst expectations.

Capital Strength and Outlook

Tryg demonstrated a robust capital position, with its solvency ratio increasing to 196% from 192% at the end of the first quarter. Reflecting this financial strength, the insurer proposed an ordinary dividend of 2.15 DKK per share, an increase from 2.05 DKK a year earlier.

"Tryg continued to build strong customer and commercial momentum in the second quarter," CEO Johan Kirstein Brammer said in a statement. He noted that customer satisfaction rose for the third consecutive quarter while sales and retention improved across all markets.
