Background

TotalEnergies plans to invest $10 billion in Argentina to expand its energy production, Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne said on Thursday at an investment conference in Paris. The announcement signals a significant long-term commitment to the South American nation's strategic energy sector.

Investment Breakdown and Targets

The French energy company will distribute the investment across several projects, including drilling new wells in the Tierra del Fuego province and expanding natural gas production in Neuquen, home to a large part of the Vaca Muerta shale formation. Pouyanne stated the company aims to increase its output in the country.

"We want to enhance production to 16 million cubic metres per day," Pouyanne said. According to the CEO, TotalEnergies expects to invest between $4 billion and $5 billion of the total amount over the next 10 years.

Strategic Context

The announcement was made as Argentine President Javier Milei visited France to attract foreign capital for the country's key industries. TotalEnergies is already a major operator in Argentina, accounting for approximately a quarter of the nation's total gas production, according to its corporate website.

The investment underscores the vast potential of Argentina's energy reserves, particularly the Vaca Muerta formation, one of the world's largest unconventional oil and gas deposits. In August, the formation produced 72% of Argentina’s total oil and 62% of its gas, according to data from consultancy GKC.

Market Implications

This planned investment aligns with TotalEnergies' global growth strategy, which targets a 4% annual increase in energy output through 2030. For Argentina, attracting such large-scale foreign investment is crucial for developing its infrastructure and unlocking the economic potential of its natural resources.

State-run energy firm YPF projects that by 2031, the Vaca Muerta formation alone could generate $50 billion in export revenue, positioning the energy sector as a potential rival to the country's dominant agriculture industry.
