TotalEnergies Announces Angolan Oil Discovery, Acquires New Exploration Stakes

TotalEnergies announced a new oil discovery in Angola and is expanding its exploration footprint in the country, signaling a deepened commitment to its West African operations. The French energy major is moving to quickly develop the new find while simultaneously securing new acreage for future growth.
New Discovery and Production Boost
The company confirmed the Acacia-5 oil discovery within the established Block 17. According to a company statement, the find is expected to add 6,000 barrels per day to the block's total output.
TotalEnergies is pursuing a fast-track development plan for the discovery, which was made in June 2026. The company anticipates that production from the new well could begin within three months, quickly adding to existing output from the prolific block.
Expansion into New Acreage
In a concurrent move, TotalEnergies has signed agreements with Angola’s national petroleum regulator, Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis, to expand its exploration activities. The key terms of the agreements include:
Ad- Acquiring a 40% operated interest in two new exploration blocks.
- The new assets are Block 17/25 and Block 32/21, both located in the Lower Congo Basin.
This acquisition broadens the company's upstream portfolio in the region, balancing the development of mature assets with the search for new resources.
Strategic Commitment to Angola
These developments are part of a larger strategic investment in the country. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne said Wednesday that the company and its partners plan to invest $10 billion in Angola over the next five years.
This significant capital commitment underscores the long-term strategic importance of Angola to TotalEnergies' global energy portfolio and reflects the company's confidence in the nation's oil and gas sector.
