Tech Rally Lifts Nasdaq, S&P 500; Dow Slips to Close Mixed

Summary
U.S. stocks showed a split performance Friday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq gaining 0.40% on semiconductor strength, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 0.19%.
U.S. equity markets finished mixed on Friday, as a rally in technology shares propelled the Nasdaq Composite higher while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session in negative territory. The split performance highlighted a day of sectoral rotation among investors.
A Divergent Close
At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 0.19%, according to market data from Investing.com. In contrast, the broader S&P 500 index added 0.16%, and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite led the major indices with a gain of 0.40%.
The divergence was driven by conflicting sector performance. Strength in the Technology, Industrials, and Telecoms sectors provided upward momentum, while losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials, and Consumer Goods sectors weighed on the market, particularly the Dow.
Semiconductor Stocks Lead, Blue Chips Lag
The technology sector's outperformance was largely fueled by significant gains in semiconductor and hardware companies. Top performers on the S&P 500 included:
Ad- Lam Research Corp (LRCX): +6.98%
- Seagate Technology PLC (STX): +6.93%
- Applied Materials Inc (AMAT): +6.51%
Conversely, several blue-chip stocks dragged on the Dow. International Business Machines (IBM) was the index's worst performer, falling 3.45%. Other notable decliners included Walt Disney Company (DIS), which dropped 2.54%, and Nike Inc (NKE), which fell 2.34% to a five-year low.
Market Internals and Commodities
Despite the gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, underlying market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 1,794 to 919. This suggests the day's rally was not broad-based and was concentrated in a narrower group of stocks.
In other market indicators, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often seen as a gauge of investor fear, fell 4.08% to 14.81. In commodities, crude oil futures for October delivery fell 2.58% to $99.28 a barrel, while December gold futures rose 0.47%.
